New Beginnings of 2009

A couple of weeks ago, we thought that spring had come early, and we started off in high hopes of some early plants for the Farmers Market in our area. We planted most of our greenhouse and rejoiced in the warm temperatures that would nuture our eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes, among others….

Alas, Mother Nature tricked us again (she does so frequently around here)! Winter came back with a vengence, and I am truly grateful that my husband figured out how to recover the greenhouse doors to keep in as much warmth as possible; they had been previously ripped off from the frame in a wind storm.

We shrugged and kept on planting….what else are you going to do? Our tenacity and patience has been rewarded finally with the first sprouts of our planting!

Some of the first of our new sprouts for the year!

Some of the first of our new sprouts for the year! And, yes, that is a rose quartz crystal in the corner of the tray; one of our greenhouse mascots...

This is the exciting time around here: we stare at a bunch of dirt for what seems like eons, hoping that we did everything right and we will be rewarded with baby plants once again. When they actually start popping up, we breathe a sigh of relief that life begins again.

I think that this year that is especially true, with the economy the way it is. We are all looking for a way to feed ourselves and our families without using all of our money to do it.

That’s where we come in (we hope!). We sell organic seedlings at our closest farmers’ market and try to help home gardeners out by providing locally grown, preferably heirloom plants, without the use of non-renewable resources like electricity for heating mats or lights. We figure if they won’t grow in our greenhouse, they have no business being outside either.

We are very excited to get our blog going this year so you can get a first hand look at what we do to bring those plants to the customers (maybe some them are reading right now!) and what we do in our own garden. I hope that you will tag along with us this year as we share our business and personal journey in organic gardening! Thanks!
